Environmental Protection

Goal 5 - Protecting Oregon’s Mineral Resources

Goal 5 is one of 19 statewide land use goals and is intended to protect natural resources such as aggregate resources.  The state Land Conservation and Development Commission has adopted rules to implement Goal 5 and protect neighboring residents.  Lane County and the state Department of Land Conservation and Development are tasked with determining whether Old Hazeldell meets Goal 5 specifications. Based on our research, Old Hazeldell Quarry will exceed Goal 5 specifications - minimizing sound, protecting water, protecting air quality, and not disrupting traffic. Clear Air

This quarry will not impact air quality. There are strong Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) rules that require quarries to manage dust on site so they do not impact the community’s air. Most of the dust from quarries comes from processing and transporting the rock. To control this dust, our quarry will keep our equipment washed, tires clean, and spray the roads. Our facility is designed so that the water from dust control drains into an on-site stormwater control facility. We will also secure an air quality discharge permit from the Lane Regional Air Protection Agency (LRAPA).

No Water Impact

As it is a hillside quarry, Old Hazeldell will not impact water quality. There are a few seasonal drainages on the eastside of the property. To avoid any impact to these drainages, we limited the scope of the quarry plan to the east and are creating a setback so those water resources are untouched by quarrying activities.

Maintaining Natural Beauty

Oakridge is a beautiful community surrounded by ridgelines and trees. The quarry plan calls for thinning of trees - where appropriate - to help prevent fire and create better wildlife habitat wherever possible. We will use the removed trees and the natural rocks to create a natural, visually appealing screen that will keep Oakridge beautiful.
